Showing Great Danes

When showing a Great Dane your dog must be at least six months old, cannot be spayed or neutered, and be a papered breed. The main purpose to a dog show is to evaluate the breed. Different breeds have different characteristics. Great Danes must have a high head, broad muzzle, and muscular appearence.

Training

When training a Great Dane it is important to be patient. Great Danes do not take well to violence and yelling. If you take your time and be calm, the dog will gain your trust faster and be more willing to complete the task given to him. If you reward them with something they like they will catch on to the point given to them. It is more common for Great Danes to listen better to females because they have a softer and quieter voice. Great Danes are very fast learners and they take well to the things they like.

Fighting Great Danes

People often use Great Danes for dog fighting because they have a large and very powerful jaw. With the size of the dog, it makes them a harder target so other dogs can take down a larger and stronger target. Great Danes have large paws used to bat at the other dog to defend themselves. If a Dane can get its jaws around another dog they can do a very good job at taking the dog down. Great Danes are not as popular with dog fighting as pit bulls, but they are still fought.

Birth

Great Dane usually do not have problems when they are giving birth, but it is very possible. Usually when a Dane is pregnant they carry the litter for about 53-63 days. If the colors of the parents are wrong, the puppies will come out with birth defects such as being deaf or blind. Because Great Danes are so big, it is common for them to have to many puppies. If the mother has too many pups, they are most likely to die before, or shortly after birth. When the mother is carrying two many puppies it also puts her health at risk.
